Classic Thanksgiving Commercials – Macy’s Snoopy Plushie

In our previous installment of classic Thanksgiving commercials, we discussed the contradictory nature of a holiday that both celebrates and stuffs its animal mascot. Today, our next Thanksgiving commercial represents another contradiction of sorts, as well as another beloved (and stuffed!) animal mascot.

Macy’s Snoopy Plushie

In this case the contradiction is the transition from parade to profit. Here we see Snoopy from the Peanuts comic strip go from looming parade float to cuddly shopping bag stuffer! When you saw these limited time toys on the shelves you knew the holidays were around the corner. For $50 plus dollars you could take your holiday garbed Snoopy home and make all your other plushies jealous!

What really makes this commercial for me though is the charmingly drawn illustration of the Macy’s store with the imposing Snoopy balloon silhouette  floating by. I can easily see it as a prequel to the original Peanuts Thanksgiving special, perhaps titled, “You Missed the Parade (Again!), Charlie Brown!” ;)
